Intermediate Online Poetry Workshop:

Revision and Submission

Spring 2017

The course will be for those interested in working on their poems in increasingly more complex ways.  In terms of content, this might mean deepening and clarifying one’s relationship to the central tensions and paradoxes within the subject matter.  In terms of the form of the poems, we will be cultivating a stronger understanding of how various elements and devices work together toward the deeper realization of a poem.  We will focus both on the poem as a product of a speaker’s voice and as an artifact on the page.  Concurrently, we will explore the journey of submitting poems for publication, beginning with the exploratory reading of journals and including creating all of the materials needed to submit poems – and, optionally of course, actually sending some!

We will have ten one-week sessions that will begin and end on Sunday.  Each Sunday, I will email a lecture on a different element of the revision and submission processes.  These will each include an “assignment,” and over the course of the class the assignments will guide you along the journey of creating everything you need – and need to know – to revise and submit your work.  For our work on revision, I will organize the class into teams, and everyone will send a poem they wish to revise to their team.  I will then provide instructions for teammates to respond to one another’s work, and I will give feedback myself.

Sunday, February 19 through Sunday, April 30

A computer and internet connection, an email account, 3-5 hours a week, and a desire to explore poetry and your own creative process and unique voice.
